Foundation Stage Curriculum
At Birkenshaw C.E (c) Primary School our Early Years Curriculum is designed to meet the individual and the specific needs of differing cohorts of our children. We offer a balance of child-initiated and adult-led learning using a rich continuous provision, enhanced provision, quality adult interactions, small group activities and whole class teaching sessions.
We understand that play is an integral part of learning and this is at the heart of our early years’ curriculum. We believe that the correct mix of adult directed and uninterrupted child initiated play ensures the best outcomes for pupils. We have set up a strong continuous provision and add enhancements to engage children and extend their learning further.
We understand and follow children’s interests and provide opportunities throughout our EYFS curriculum to support learning, consolidate and deepen knowledge and ensure children meet their next steps.
We encourage children to develop the characteristics of effective learning through an enquiry and independence approach.
We know our children well academically but also socially and emotionally. Staff are quick to identify areas of learning or concepts that children may be struggling with and intervene professionally through quality interactions in provision and small group or individual extra support. Staff also provide pastoral and emotional support for children and their families. Warm and positive relationships between staff and children, consistent routines and strong relationships with parents are key.
Our curriculum is designed to reflect the needs of the children in our school and personalised to allow them to flourish.
